Caskhouse · An independent notebook

Good ingredients.
A little patience.

A small collection of notes about beer: the grains that shape it, the hops that bring it to life, and the traditions behind a familiar glass.

Start with malt

Pale malt brings gentle grain and bread flavours. A darker roast can add caramel, coffee or cocoa notes. The proportions matter as much as the individual ingredients.

A place for hops

Hop varieties can be floral, earthy, spicy or fruity. Early additions usually contribute more bitterness; later additions preserve more aroma.

Three styles to explore

Bitter: balanced malt and hops, traditionally served from a cask. Porter: a darker style with roasted notes. Pale ale: a broad family in which hop character often takes the lead.
